I use Robitussin and Codeine to relieve my cough! It actually works better than any OTC cough medicine. I never suffered any of the side effects other than drowsiness, which is really good at night so I don't keep myself or my family members up.

It's not really fair to blame the codeine for your mother being housebound However Codeine is a pain medication. Seek a second opinion.
